Zarqa

Zarqa is a Jordanian city and the capital of the Zarqa Governorate, which is nearly 20 km northeast of the capital city of Amman. Zarqa is the third largest city in terms of population, with a population of about 572,290 in 2013, and is considered the industrial capital of Jordan. There are many locations not to be missed in Zarqa including a wildlife reserve, a wetland reserve and several castles.

Located in the centerpiece of the Azraq oasis, 100 kilometers east of Amman, Qasr Azraq is a historic castle in Jordan that was originally built as a fortress for our Nabataean ancestors. The use of the Qasr later fell to Roman followed by Mamluks in the thirteenth century AD. Some evidence indicates that the Greeks and Romans were the first to establish this castle at its current size.

With dimensions ranging from 72 to 80 meters, the castle is a huge rectangular structure that was built out of black volcanic basalt stones over three floors, two of which are still visible. It also contains several towers, several entrances, a mosque, rooms, two stone doors and a water well.

The opening of the new 5-star Movenpick Hotel and Resort, combined with the existing 4-star Dead Sea Spa Hotel, allows visitors to stay in the valley while exploring its many attractions.
